a report by Doris (Warschawski) Fogel

Claus Hirsch, George Spitzer, Heinz Gruenberg, Erica (Bassist) Freier, Doris (Warschawski) Fogel and honorary class member Peter Konicki, together with spouses and/or significant others had their annual class reunion in May of this year in Berlin, Germany. Harry Jorysz and wife Lore joined us for our reunion.

Through the diligent efforts of our “resident tour guide” Peter Konicki, we were housed at the beautiful Palace Hotel, adjacent to the Europa Center.

As a group we did a City bus tour to get our bearings; we attended Shabbat services at Oranienburger Strasse New Synagogue; we did a boat tour on the River Spree; a walking tour of the Jewish Quarter in the Mitte Section; we went to the Komische Oper Berlin and saw a delightful version of Don Giovanni; we enjoyed a marvelous concert at the Berliner Sinfonie and we saw a wonderful cabaret show at the Friedrichstadt Palast. After touring the Jewish Museum, we were joined by former Shanghailanders Sonja Mühlberger, Margit Siebner and Martin Beutler, and Renate Gruscha at the Museum for a buffet dinner and some Kletzmer music. Dinner at our host’s home was a real treat for all of us. We each did our own thing too. Some of us visited the Sachsenhausen Camp as well as the Weisensee cemetery; and of course, some of the wonderful museums to be found in Berlin.

Above all though, we were all together for a week. We enjoyed great food, good spirits and each other as you will see by some of the accompanying pictures.

Our Form IV Reunion is an annual event. One that has been going on now for over seven years. Plans are now in the making for our 2004 Reunion, which will be held next spring in New Orleans, LA.
